State v. Simpson, 1KE-01-916 CR. Terry Simpson and

Joshua Anderson charged with second-degree murder

for the beating death of Steve Perry in Ketchikan in 2001.

Simpson and Anderson claimed self-defense against Perry’s

unsolicited sexual advances. Verdict at trial: Acquitted of

murder.

 

State v. Charles, 1KE-02-155 CR. Brock Charles accused of

second-degree murder for the beating death of Gordon Rasnick

on Christmas Eve 2001. Defense counsel challenged the credibility

of the state’s alleged eyewitness. Verdict at trial: Acquitted of murder.

 

State v. Smith, 1JU-00-105 CR. Ronald Smith accused of second-degree murder and robbery for the beating death of a marijuana dealer in Juneau in 2000. Verdict at trial: Guilty; however, the conviction was reversed on appeal because the trial court allowed the introduction of impermissible evidence over defense counsel’s objections.

 

State v. McAnulty, 3PA-97-1588 CR. Jeremy McAnulty was charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death and chainsaw dismemberment of Sean Wilson in Big Lake in 1997. Outcome: After seven full days of deliberation the jury could not reach a unanimous decision, and the court declared a mistrial. McAnulty later made a plea agreement for second-degree murder and a sentence of 45 years.

 

State v. Medina 3KO-98-338 CR. Rolando Medina accused of second-degree murder for the beating death of his brother in Kodiak in 1993, based on the allegations of a third brother. Medina was extradited from the Philippines four years after the killing. Outcome: murder charges dismissed.

 

State v. Stockdale, 3DI-99-214 CR. Thomas Stockdale accused of attempted murder and first-degree assault in Dillingham for stabbing Olaf Johnson at Johnson’s residence in 1999. Verdict at trial: Acquitted of all charges.

 

State v. Williams, 3AN-96-9053 CR. Brent Williams charged with first-degree murder for the stabbing death of Willie Mezak, as well as committing five armed robberies in Anchorage. Verdict at trial: Acquitted of first-degree murder; convicted on other charges.
